Singapore Polytechnic

Hitting the right notes

Not satisfied with just academic achievements, Singapore Polytechnic (SP) graduate Nelson Tan shines with his musical talents as well!

The graduate from SP's Diploma in Digital Media was one of the top 13 finalists, out of more than 300 participants, in the recent Eco Music Challenge, an online song-writing competition held by NEA.

For his entry, Nelson wrote the lyrics, produced, and composed an energetic Chinese song titled "Green Environment".

He shared, "I love music and also the environment, thus this was a great opportunity to use music to share lessons about saving the earth."

The song will also be in the Eco Music Challenge Season 2 album, which will be released in October.

Nelson's passion for music began during secondary school days when he joined the Chinese Orchestra and learned to play the erhu.

The talented music man did not stop at one instrument though – Nelson also taught himself to play the piano, violin, harmonica, guitar, dizi, recorder and the ukulele!

When asked about his amazing feat, the determined lad said, "Every time I want to learn a new instrument, I will go and buy it and try until I know how to play!"

During his time in SP, Nelson was already producing youtube covers and more recently, he was the champion for the C'ING 2011, a nation-wide song composing competition for the youths.

The current first-year student at Nanyang Technological University's School of Art, Design and Media hopes to meet more music lovers and continue to produce great music in the future.
